Maintenance of urban for the residents and for its essential value in the face of increasing population and expanding cities requires that ecological knowledge should be better integrated into urban planning. The explosion of the greenway concept in Europe is a very recent phenomenon. The development of green space along urban rivers could mitigate urban heat island effects, enhance the physical and mental well-being of city dwellers, improve flood resilience and could sustain biodiversity. The Pedieos River is the longest river in Cyprus. The Pedieos River with a total length of 100 km is the longest river in Cyprus. Similar to the majority of rivers on the island, it is a non-perennial river, of ephemeral nature that generally flows during the rainy winter months or after heavy rainfall events. A literature review was undertaken to discover the importance of rivers within the urbanised areas. It is known that the Pedieos River is closely linked to the history of Nicosia as it is one of the reasons for the city’s existence at the site. Simultaneously, it has been the cause of the city’s inundation on. The increase of impermeable areas as a result of urbanisation is also one of the main causes for flooding in recent years. In this research, it was investigated current situation of the river and discussed its possible rehabilitation for more sustainable city.
