EFFECT OF NATURAL ZEOLITE AND SYNTHETIC ZEOLITE ON ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF HIGHLY EXPANSIVE BENTONITE

Expansive soils are known as problematic soils which causes serious engineering problems in constructions. Many studies have been conducted for improving the soils with proper additives such as lime, bitumen, polymers and etc. This study evaluates the applicability of the natural zeolite, provided from Rota Zeolite Mining Co.in Turkey, and the artificial zeolite produced by Koruma Klor Alkali A.Ş., Derince, Kocaeli, Turkey as landfill liner. In this study the swelling and consolidation properties of bentonite with the natural zeolite and synthetically obtained artificial zeolite have been studied. For the investigation of swelling 20%,40% and 60% and 80% zeolite additives were used with the highly swelling sodium bentonite. The Atterberg limits and the swelling pressure and the consolidation data were obtained. The results showed that there is good improvement that causes a considerable decrease in swelling properties of highly swelling bentonite. The naturally obtained zeolite showed better results when compared with the synthetic (artificial) zeolite. The results showed that with the 20% addition of natural zeolite there is a considerable amount of decrease in liquid limit as 18% whereas 28% in plastic limit. With the addition of 20% natural zeolite the swelling property decreased 35% as percentage. This study is based on the work supported by the Scientific Research Projects of Marmara University with the code number: FEN-B-101018-0529
