ESTIMATION OF HIGH BIOMASS CONCENTRATION FROM NANNOCHLOROPSIS OCULATA WITH RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY

Algae can be classified to two groups as microalgae and macroalgae. Microalgae generally include one cell and don’t have real organelles. They can grow as autotrophs, heterotrophic and facultative. They can be used for various goals such as cosmetics, pharmacy, medicine, food and energy in the industry. Nannochloropsis oculata is a kind of microalgae and it can be grown open ponds and reactor systems for various aims. In this study, we aimed to show biomass potential of Nannochloropsis oculata in different concentrations of macro molecules in Johnsons’s medium. For this, we prepared Johnsons’s medium in different concentrations of KH2PO4 (0.1-2 g/L), NaHCO3 (2-32 g/L) and KNO3 (0.1-1.6 g/L). We examined changes on biomass related with various concentrations of phosphorus, carbon and nitrogen in this medium. In addition, we researched biomass productivity using central composite design (CCD) for obtaining the maximum biomass productivity. According to experimental results, the maximum biomass concentration was obtained in 0.2 g/L of KH2PO4, 16 g/L of NaHCO3 and 0.8 g/L of KNO3 with 2.17g of biomass and the minimum biomass concentration was 1.27 g/L in 1 g/L of KH2PO4, 4 g/L of NaHCO3 and 0.2 g/L of KNO3. In conclusion, Nannochloropsis oculata can be used at these conditions with high biomass for various goals in the industry.
