IMPROVEMENT OF THE SURFACE QUALITY OF CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER BY BURNISHING PROCESS IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS

In recent years, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) is widely used in the industry due to its durability, lightweight, corrosion and fatigue properties. Machining processes are often a critical part of the production and ball burnishing of CFRP parts in a wide variety of applications, such as aerospace, automotive, transport, and biomedical devices. The burnishing process is a method applied to bring the part to the desired surface quality after being machined and it is a practical, low cost and fast finishing method with a ball burnishing tool pressed against the workpiece. In this study, the ball burnishing operation was applied to improve the surface quality of CFRP material and the effect of ball burnishing parameters on surface quality was investigated. The experimental design was determined using Taguchi L18 mixed design. Taguchi method was used to save cost and time by decreasing the number of experiments. Ball burnishing operations were carried out by determining three different forces and three different feed rates in six different conditions. In addition, variance analysis (ANOVA) was performed to determine the effect of parameters on surface quality. In this way, the most appropriate test parameters which affect the surface quality of the CFRP material were determined.
