INVESTIGATION ON THE IMPACT PERFORMANCES OF RGO AND ZRO2 REINFORCED POLYMER COMPOSITES FOR BIO-BEARING APPLICATIONS

Biomaterials are now a significant class of materials with potential for widespread use in the medical sector to fabricate drugs, implants, prostheses, artificial bearing, etc. The results of intensive research conducted over the previous few years clearly suggest that these novel hybrid materials have the potential to address a wide range of health-related issues effectively. Various Carbon and Ceramic based bio nanocomposites are getting attention from researchers and academicians to utilize in polymer composites due to their excellent biocompatibility and sustainability. In this article, UHMWPE reinforced hybrid composites containing Zirconium oxide (ZrO2), and reduced graphene oxide (green) particles were prepared via liquid phase ultrasonication and hot compression technique. The effect of ZrO2 contents (5,10 wt.%) and rGO contents (0.5,1,1.5 wt.%) on the impact properties of UHMWPE and UHMWPE/rGO- ZrO2 reinforced composites were successfully investigated using Izod impact test. The mold was fabricated locally in the lab, and the ASTM D256 standard samples were cut from the square plate of 10x10 Cm2 for the Impact test. The impact strength of the developed composites is in the range of 69.68 to 87.61 KJ/m2. The maximum impact strength was shown by UHMWPE reinforced with 1Wt.% rGO and 5 Wt.% ZrO2. The reduced Graphene oxide (rGO) and Zirconium nanoparticles have increased the impact abilities of materials. It may be applied to several human body components, such as the liner materials used in the knee, fingers, hip, and shoulder joint applications.
