RECYCLING OF HORNBEAM WOOD WASTE TO PRODUCE WOOD-POLYMER COMPOSITES FOR AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

In recent years, automotive industry has focused on lightening of materials because of reducing fuel consumption. The wood-plastic polymers became very popular for interior design of automotive industry. Furthermore, use of natural cellulose materials such as wood fiber and wood flours as reinforcement or filler in thermoplastics has many advantages over the inorganic and synthetic fillers traditionally used in polymer composites. Natural fibers are light and inexpensive, they are abundant and they have high specific stiffness and strength. The environmental aspects are also important; natural fibers are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable materials. In this study, polypropylene (PP) based wood composites with waste hornbeam flour were produced by twin-screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) is used as an internal lubricant in the preparation process. Firstly, wood flours, MAPP and PP were mixed in the mixer in different ratio, and they processed in the extruder to form of granules. The test samples were prepared as plates to evaluate their physical and mechanical properties by a press machine. Scanning electron microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis were conducted to determine the structural and morphological properties of the composites. Thermal properties were determined according to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Tensile tests were carried out to observe mechanical properties.
