THE EFFECT OF BAFFLE LOCATION ON SLOSHING IN THE RECTANGULAR TANK

The sloshing creates a force dependent on pressure for all geometries that move with acceleration. Especially in tanks such as partially filled fuel and ballast in the ship, undesirable force and pressure occurs due to ship motion. In this study, the phenomenon of sloshing and sloshing reduction method has been investigated. Horizontal baffle has been used as the sloshing damping method. Horizontal baffles were placed in different parts of the rectangular tank and their effects were examined. The study was carried out with CFD analysis using the volume of fluid (VOF) method. Numerical solution was validated with previous experimental study results obtained from the literature. Baffle effects were compared according to the pressure values obtained from certain points. The baffles used are in five different points below and above of the free surface. In addition, the tank motion was assumed as a harmonic sway excitation at a single frequency value. As a result of the study, it has been observed that the baffles located in the regions close to the free surface reduce the sloshing effect. Especially, the baffle located at the free surface effectively reduces the pressure according to the unbaffled configuration. Consequently, these baffles play an important role in the damping of the waves formed on the free surface.
