UTILIZATION OF CALABRIAN PINE (PINUS BRUTIA TEN.) BARK EXTRACTIVE BASED ADHESIVE IN PARTICLEBOARDS

Tree bark is one of the main wastes after harvesting in the forest and is mostly evaluated as fuel. In this study, the effect of Calabrian tree bark extract (Pinus Buritia Ten.) was examined on particleboard's formaldehyde emission and physicomechanical properties. The different concentrations of extractives (0, 1.5, 3%) were added to the UF adhesives. Moreover, wood particles were also impregnated with Calabrian pine extracts (1% w/w) by immersion methods for 2 hours. The target density of particleboards was 0.650 g/cm3. The drafts were hot-pressed at a pressure of 23-25 kp/cm2 and 150°C for 7 min.The modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and internal bond strength were investigated as mechanical properties, while density, water absorption, and thickness swelling as physical properties. The formaldehyde emission of the boards was determined by the flask method. According to obtained results, Calabrian tree bark extracts negatively influenced the mechanical properties of particleboards. As the concentration of tree bark extract increased, the bending properties and internal bond strength bond decreased. However, the tree bark extracts positively affected the dimensional stability of boards. The thickness swelling and water absorption values of particleboards improved as a result of the water-repellent properties of extractives. Moreover, the formaldehyde emission values also decreased with the addition of Calabrian pine extracts.
