DEVELOPMENT OF MIXED MATRIX MEMBRANE FOR CARBONDIOXIDE SEPARATION

Membrane technologies can be an alternative to other separation processes due to their many advantages such as low energy consumption, easy capacity increase, continuous separation, easy adaptation to other separations in uses, no special requirements. With increasing of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and industry, membrane separation technologies are becoming increasingly important for CO2 capture. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) prepared by incorporating inorganic fillers into organic polymer matrix have the potential to enhance the properties of polymeric membranes and to improve the separation performance. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) that has been widely used in industrial applications due to its properties such as high gas permeability, soft and flexible nature, transparency, hydrophobicity, durability, stability, biocompatibility and ease in application is a silicone-based organic polymer. Zeolites known as molecular sieves due to their molecular size pore structure are hydrated aluminosilicate minerals and have properties such as high mechanical, thermal and chemical stability, ion exchange capacity and molecular sieving. Zeolite 4A which can be used as an inorganic filler has been extensively studied for a wide variety of gas separation applications. In this study, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and zeolite 4A-filled PDMS mixed matrix membranes were prepared for CO2 separation. The structural properties of the membranes prepared by the solution-casting method were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA).
