EFFECT OF METHIONINE AND TYROSINE AMINO ACIDS ON CALCIUM CARBONATE PRECIPITATION

Calcium carbonate is one of the inorganic salts widely used in various industry such as paint, paper, rubber, plastic, and medicine. In this study, calcium carbonate were precipitated by the reaction of calcium chloride dihydrate and sodium carbonate in the absence and the presence of methionine and tyrosine amino acids used as the additives. The morphologies, phase structures, and polymorphic transformations of calcium carbonate crystals were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyzer. The results showed that the additives used had significant effects on calcium carbonate morphology. It was found that the structure of the calcium carbonate changed from calcite to vaterite form in the presence of methionine and tyrosine. While the crystals obtained in pure media had a cubic-like calcite, spherical vaterite formed in the presence of both additives. The average particle of calcium carbonate decreased with the addition of the additives to the medium. Furthermore, the influence of additives on the functional groups of the calcium carbonate was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. As a result, this study will be useful for the selection of calcium carbonate crystal morphology modifier and the determination of the effects of methionine and tyrosine amino acids on the precipitation process.
