In the twentieth century, more women have started to participate in male-dominated professions. For a long time, seafaring which is an extreme example of a male-dominated profession has been described from masculine perspectives all over the world. Over the last decades, Turkish women have begun to struggle for their existence in the maritime sector in which heightened awareness of gender is an issue. The focus of this study is to determine the perspective of both men and women Turkish seafarers on the issue of the employment of women on merchant vessels. A survey was conducted to collect information on the impact of female personnel on the ship's social environment, the process of conducting the work on ships and the participants' willingness to work with female personnel. In this study, the responses of the participants who had previously worked with female staff and who had not worked with female staff before were compared. The results showed that seafarers who had worked with women seafarer before were more positive than those who had not. It was found that the negative point of view on the employment of women on board started to be broken with the increasing number of women seafarers in the sector and male seafarers seeing the performance of women on ships. The findings of this research reveal the need to increase awareness on the employment of women seafarers in the maritime sector to improve living conditions on board.
