INTERDISCIPLINARY APPLICATION OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS: GROUNDED THEORY IN ARCHITECTURE

Qualitative studies is a process where the researcher asks questions with the desire of learning more about the topic and heads for generating answers with a research pattern appropriate for the asked question. In qualitative studies, methods which are appropriate for the nature of the studies are applied. For example, phenomenology is used for the explanation of the meaning attributed by individuals to their experiences related to a phenomenon or concept; case study is used for the results being achieved in scope of the meanings being put forward with portrayals and where the researcher is focused on a specific problem; and the grounded theory method is widely used for the purpose of generating a new theory where no theory exists for a topic or is insufficient to describe it. In such studies; generating patterns of the research, collecting and analyzing data and finally reporting are the significant steps. This study focuses on a preliminary study which is the first step to a (PhD thesis) study which may put forth the definition of plasticity of space in architecture in the 21st century. Despite of mentioning the plasticity in architecture, a need for generating a theory has emerged, based on the fact there is no clear definition of plasticity in architecture. Therefore, the grounded theory method has been applied in the said study. The first of the two main aims of this study is the desire to introduce grounded theory in the architectural literature; the second is to explain the “how” to situations which may be confronted within the course. In this study, questionnaire technique has been applied to a group of experts whereas the achieved results have been evaluated using the steps of the grounded theory method. 9 temporary categories have been achieved which are: space perception, material, esthetics, changeability/transformability of the space composition, illusion, physical quantities, sense and structure components. Eventually, it has been observed that the grounded theory method can be applied in theorizing studies in architecture but that sampling-specific approaches of the study may differentiate. In this case, it turns out that theoretical sampling must be referred to.
