OZONATION OF TWO SIMULATED MIXTURES OF GREYWATER SAMPLES

Water scarcity has pushed research into eco-friendly and low energy cost efficient remediation of water resources among which greywater (GW) has also been considered However, several emerging classes of micro-pollutants exist in wastewater and greywater matrices and conventional treatment systems are not sufficient in terms of total removal of these compounds.Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are integrated to biological treatment as pre- or post treatment to remove recalcitrant organics. Ozone oxidation has been studied on greywater as it contains chemicals of emerging concern. This study was designed to assess the efficiency of ozone oxidation of synthetic greywater samples. Specific constituents of the synthetic greywater mixture were subjected to characterization studies. Efficiency of ozone oxidation was assessed by means of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254 absorbance removals that correspond the mineralization and degradation respectively. Demonstrated through the UV absorbance findings that formation of degradation by-products have taken place. And breakdown of the aromatic structure occur concurrently with the COD and TOC removal mechanism. From the aspects of ozone dosages in proportion to quantity of pollutant, after 30 minutes, system was already feeded with 94.08 mg/L ozone. In view of thee TOC of 280 mg/L as the initial conditions, the specific ozon ratio of the system was (~COD/TOC) 0.33.
