PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A RC BUILDING DESIGNED ACCORDING TO TBEC-2018

In recent years, strength-based design procedures including restrictive design rules have begun to give way to the deformation-based design methods that reflects more realistic behavior. Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2018) necessitates deformation-based design procedures for only important buildings such as high-rise buildings, seismically isolated buildings etc. The approximations made in strength-based design such as using building behavior factors and overstrength factors may lead to determine the performance levels of buildings under earthquake loads inaccurately. In this study, performance evaluation of a 14-story reinforced concrete building designed according to the strength-based design principles were done. A total of 8 nonlinear time history analyses (NTHA) were performed using four strong motion record selected according to TBEC-2018 design spectrum. The average of NTHA results were compared with mode superposition method in terms of story shear forces, story displacements and story drifts. Although obtained displacement and drift values from mode superposition method are greater than those obtained from NTHA, the opposite was observed for story shear forces. Plastic rotations of column and beam sections, and deformations in shear walls were also determined and the building performance is stayed in Controlled Damage performance level under the design earthquake ground motion DD-2. However, it exhibits a performance that remains on the very safe side due to the presence of very few elements that pass into the Significant Damage Zone.
