THE CHANGE OF THE THICKNESS OF PATTERNED POLYETHYLENE FILMS USED IN RUBBER INDUSTRY WITH MACHINE SPEED PARAMETER AND INVESTIGATION OF ITS EFFECT ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Patterned (embossed) polyethylene films are a mandatory product in the rubber tire industry. It is used as a protective lining to prevent contamination of the rubber (dust and other foreign contamination factors), especially during the transportation and storage of rubber between processes in tire production, and this pattern geometry (2D and 3D) prevents the rubber from sticking to each other. It is desired that this film should be of a certain homogeneous and precise thickness and have sufficient mechanical strength. The speed of the pattern forming machine is among the factors that determine this relationship between the thickness of the film and its mechanical properties. Determining the effect of changes in film thickness on mechanical properties at different production speeds at a constant temperature and pressure is very important for a sustainable quality production. As a result of unoptimized velocity-thickness relationship, production defects, scraps, production stops and poor quality occur. In this study, the effect of the speed of the pattern machine on the pattern thickness during the creation of the pyramid shaped pattern applied on a 110±5 µm thick polyethylene film was examined and measured at different speed parameters (20-30 m/min). A correlation was obtained between the thickness change and the mechanical properties of the film (tensile, rupture, tear strength). Within the scope of the experimental studies, it was observed that the film thickness increased with increasing the speed, and it was observed that the mechanical properties could be controlled.
