THE EFFECT OF NITRIDING ON THE MECHANICAL AND WEAR PROPERTIES OF TIALZRN COATED H13 STEEL

The present paper reports influence of gas nitriding process on the mechanical and wear properties of H13 steel which was coated TiAlZrN thin films with Closed field unbalanced magnetron spruttering method. Before the deposition process, gas nitriding of H13 steel was carried out at 525 oC for 8 hours. After that, the surface of nitreded steels were grounded and polished respectively for removing the white layer. After all of these processes, nitreded (N-Zr1-2-3) and basic steels (Zr1-2-3) were coated simultaneously with using the same deposition parameters (Zr1-2-3 target current: 2A-3A-5A, Bias voltage: -90V, Working Pressure: 2,5x10-3 Torr). The hardness of coatings was measured with Vickers microhardness tester. According the hardness values, the hardness of N-Zr is higher than the Zr coatings. The highest microhardness was obtained as 2386 HV in the N-Zr3. Adhesion strength of the coatings was evaluated with scratch resistance tester. As a result of comparision, it was determined that the nitriding before the deposition had a possitive effect on adhesion strength of the coatings. Wear behavior of coatings were tested with ball-on disc tribometer and worn volumes were measured using optical profilometer. Based on the wear test, N-Zr3 which has the highest hardness possessed the best wear resistance compare to other coatings.
