THE EFFECTS OF TRICLOSAN ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS ON THE PHYSICAL AND THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BURN PRESSURE GARMENTS

Pressure garment technique is a rehabilitation technique to prevent and/or reduce the formation of scar and contractures after third and fourth degree burn injuries. It has been found that applying pressure to this regenerating skin can accelerate the healing process, prevent the thickening, buckling and nodular formation and decrease the inflammatory response and the amount of blood reaching the scar tissue. In this study, novel burn pressure garments having durable antimicrobial property were developed using a Triclosan antimicrobial agent procedure. Antimicrobial test results following AATCC 100 Test Method showed 99% reduction of bacteria for fabrics treated with Triclosan antimicrobial agent procedures even after 50 launderings. Thermophysiological properties (thermal resistance (Rct) and isolation properties (clo unit) were tested. A small significant increase was observed in terms of thermal resistance (Rct) (Tog) and isolation (It) (clo) properties after treatments. Physical and mechanical properties were also tested in terms of air permeability, bursting strength, stiffness and drapeability. The air permeability, the bursting strength and the drapeability showed a small significant decrease after antimicrobial agent procedures while the stiffness showed a small significant increase for fabric samples. These results show that these novel burn pressure garments will decrease infection and support comfort during long period of use.
