A SUSTAINABLE MOSQUE DESIGN IN PRESTON

Competitions are important in architecture to see innovative perspectives. Especially international competitions reveals how many different ways a project can be designed with different perspectives. In 2021 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) has held an international competition to build a mosque building in Preston, UK. In this paper one of the competition entries designed by authors was examined. This mosque competition entry is stands out with its sustainable features. Today, changing climate and restricted natural resources forced architects to design more consciously. It’s no longer possible to design unaware of our environment. Therefore sustainable architectural buildings are crucial for our future. In this mosque design, harmony with the built environment and sustainability are taken into consideration first. Rainwater harvesting system taken into consideration to use for garden irrigating, and in toilets. Solar panels placed on the outer roof of the mosque. Natural lighting and ventilation are designed properly to have an energy efficient building. Also the chosen materials has low embodied carbon values not to harm environment. This mosque was designed as a minimalist building besides its sustainable features. Simplicity is at the forefront in the essence of Islam. The aim of this design is to return to the roots of Islam and glorify simplicity. It is aimed that the design will both reflect the contemporary architecture and create a landmark building.
