ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING APPLICATIONS IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

With the advent of additive manufacturing (AM), there has been a great improvement in the production of parts with highly functional and extremely lightweight designs. In addition, many parts with complex features and geometries that cannot be produced with traditional production methods can be easily produced with the help of additive manufacturing. As a result of all these advantages, detailed studies on additive manufacturing have started in many industries and literature all over the world. The automotive industry is taking precautions to decrease fuel consumption and gas emissions. Light weighting through material substitution and redesign of components by topology optimization were identified as very important solutions. AM can be used in various industrial fields to technologically supportive or even replace the traditional production method. It is assumed that some benefits could be derived from the adoption of redesign techniques through AM based on topological optimization, for example, reduction of usage of resources in both the utilization phases and material production. One of these benefits is undoubtedly less fuel consumption due to the light-weighted. In this study, the use of the parts produced by the AM method in the automotive sector by reducing their weight with topology optimization was examined.
