AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF FOLDED YARN TWIST ON SELECTED PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES OF WOVEN FABRICS

This paper presents a study of the effects of folded yarn twist on the selected performance properties of woven fabrics. For this aim 3/1 (S) twill woven fabrics were manufactured using single weft yarns with Ne 20/1 and Ne 30/1 and folded weft yarns with Ne 20/2 and Ne 30/2 having 100 TPM and 200 TPM. Ne 20/1, 100% cotton warp sheet was used for all samples and fabrics were woven with dobby shedding rapier loom. Tensile strength, tear strength, needle penetration force and bending rigidity tests of the fabrics were performed in weft direction besides air permeability and thickness tests of fabrics. Using folded weft yarn caused remarkable increase in the thickness, tensile strength, tear strength, needle penetration force and bending rigidity and reduce in the air permeability values comparing woven with their singles. The variations in fabric thickness, air permeability, tear strength, tensile strength, bending rigidity and needle penetration force depending on the twist level of two folded yarns were evaluated. It was observed that folded yarn twist have affected different performance properties of woven folded yarn fabrics. The results showed that thickness, air permability, needle penetration force and bending rigidity of fabric increases as the folded twist level increases. Fabrics displays very small change in tear and tensile strength as the folded yarn twist level increases. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-5864-308X
