BASIC DESIGN IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY FOR URBAN OBJECT DESIGN

Basic Design is a crucial course where the initial experiences in creativity and aesthetic understanding are gained for all disciplines dealing with design. In this course, students grasp design elements and principles through practical exercises while learning fundamental concepts related to their respective fields. Therefore, Basic Design education is structured around teaching the elements and principles that constitute a visual composition. In landscape architecture education, the primary goal is to conceptualize open space organizations. However, the experiences imparted to students are not solely associated with open space design. Design is universal, and the knowledge acquired here can be integrated into various design-related fields. Landscape architects, through their education, also acquire the ability to design urban amenities that are integral to open spaces. In the Fall Semester of 2022-2023 at Karadeniz Technical University's Department of Landscape Architecture, students are expected to create a tangible design product in the final application of the Basic Design course. This tangible product involves students utilizing the design principles and elements they have learned to create an urban object. This study aims to examine how students transform abstract concepts learned over the 16-week period into a concrete urban object, exploring the concepts they use in this design process.
