CHANGE OF EVERYDAY LIFE THROUGH RECLAMATION IN KARSIYAKA

Water has become an indispensable source of life and has played an important role in shaping cities. In a city like Izmir that has very rich relationships with water coastal areas for the city are considered to be privileged. Izmir coasts have different spatial and social relations with the city every time along the gulf. However, Izmir coast, which has a rich historical, spatial and social wealth, has changed dramatically. Since the 1960s, Izmir coasts expanded with coastal filling areas and left their places to dense building blocks, coast roads and coastal landscapes. Karsiyaka-Bostanlı coastal filling area extending between Atakent dwellings and Alaybey Tersane region was chosen as a case study. An archive search was made on how the identified area was used in the past and it was compared with its current use, the reasons for this change were revealed. With postcards, old photographs and maps, both spatial transformation and its effect on everyday life have been examined. The reserach also focused on the strategies of centralized managements and local governments over these to have a better understanding. Karsiyaka coast, where a direct relationship with water was established through sea baths and beaches in the past, has left its place to coastal bands that allow only a visual relationship with it.
