DESIGN, PROTOTYPE MANUFACTURING AND TESTING OF TIER-2 LOSS OIL TYPE DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMER USING FR3 OIL
 
The use of transformers in the transmission and distribution of electrical energy plays a critical role in meeting the energy requirements of modern society. The mineral oils used in conventional transformers are petroleum-derived and can break down quickly at high temperatures, thus increasing the risk of fire. Because mineral oils can be sensitive to temperature changes owing to their low viscosity index, they cannot perform well under changing temperature conditions, while their tendency to oxidation and contamination can negatively affect their performance. Mineral oils, which need to be changed more frequently than synthetic oils, can cause incompatibility problems with some rubber and plastic materials. FR3 oil is a natural ester oil with a lower fire point and higher oxidation stability. FR3 oil has many innovative features, such as being environmentally friendly, resistant to high temperatures, providing insulation, fireproofing, and long-lasting. Because of these advantages, the use of FR3 oil in transformers is increasing. In this paper, the design, prototype manufacturing, and test stages of a Tier-2-loss oil-type distribution transformer using FR3 oil are presented. With research and development efforts focusing on higher efficiency, long life, and durability, FR3 oil-filled transformers are expected to be a key element in future energy transformation.
