EFFECT OF DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL SPRING MATERIAL AND DESIGN ON FATIGUE LIFE
 
Dual mass flywheels are the most important components and optimized way to damper vibration and irregular torques that come from engine, gearbox and road conditions in the automobile. In this study, the reasons and mechanism of breakage on the dual mass flywheel springs was examined and improvement methods recommended. The geometric and dynamic conditions of the spring and damper system was analyzed to find the breakage reason. Different properties of the spring materials compared. As a result of the study, in order to improve the dual mass flywheel spring design to infinite fatigue strength: wire diameter should be 5 mm, spring diameter should be 20.02 mm and spring material should be VDSiCrV. Power transmission technologies are gaining importance day by day in the developing automotive industry. Transmission is really important because high efficiency transmission system brings several advantages such as ensure fuel economy, increase noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance, increase the vehicle comfort and reduce the cost of repairing (Shen et al., 2018). Torsional vibrations in the crankshaft of internal combustion engines can lead to unwanted vibration and noise in the power transmission system, significantly affecting driving comfort (Pfabe and Woernle, 2016). To address this issue, dual-mass flywheels (DMF) have been introduced, serving the purpose of absorbing the vibrations and jolts that occur in the vehicle's engine across various rev ranges, thus enabling powertrain components to operate silently (Song et al., 2014). As consumers demand lower fuel consumption and enhanced driving comfort, the dual-mass flywheel has found widespread use in vehicles equipped with manual and semi-automatic transmissions. This technology has extended into many passenger cars and light trucks, where it effectively reduces driveline oscillations by mechanically decoupling the crankshaft and the transmission, providing a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience.
