EFFECT OF GAS NITRATION PROCESS APPLIED TO DRIVE SHAFT PARTS ON MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL PROPERTIES
 
31CrMoV9 quality steels are high-performance steels used in many industrial areas where machine parts are exposed to dynamic loads. Carburization, nitriding and thermo-chemical processes are applied in order to improve the corrosion and wear resistance, fatigue strength and microstructure of the materials mostly used in industrial applications. Nitriding process is a frequently used method thanks to its superior properties in surface hardening. Due to its high surface hardness, nitriding provides high resistance to friction and wear on parts subjected to overload. In particular, fatigue strength is increased by improving surface compressive stresses. In the gas nitrodation process, wide temperature ranges can be applied and different surface hardness depths can be obtained. For this reason, gas nitriding has a wide and diverse application area, and parts treated with gas nitriding gain a wide range of mechanical and metallurgical properties. In this context, in this study, phase nitriding process was applied to three different drive shaft parts produced from 31CrMoV9 quality steel and the effect of this process on the material was examined. These shafts were evaluated for nitride case depth and bond layer at four locations per shaft. In order to examine the material properties of the gas nitriding process in detail, microstructure determination and vickers hardness scanning were carried out. ORCID NO: 0009-0000-7074-4169
