ENHANCING PATCH ANTENNA’S GAIN THROUGH NEAR ZERO REFRACTIVE INDEX METASURFACE
 
This paper introduces a Near Zero Refractive Index (NZRI) Metasurface composed of hexagonal shaped unit cells, activated by a microstrip patch antenna. Placing the Metasurface (MS) superstrate above a conventional patch antenna enhances the antenna’s performance, specifically in terms of both gain and bandwidth. The MS superstrate consists of a 4x4 array of unit cells, with each unit cell having dimensions of 24x24 mm. The unit cell features concentric Double Hexagonal-shaped transmissive elements on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm, and the optimized distance of the superstrate metasurface with the radiator is set at 8 mm. This performance improvement is attributed to the negative index metamaterial (NIM) properties of the implemented MS superstrate. The patch antenna is configured for operation at 2.4 GHz and simulated in CST Studio. The metasurface successfully enhances the gain of the patch antenna by 4.42 dB. To validate the proposed design, a prototype is fabricated, and S11 is measured. The strong agreement between the simulated and measured results verifies the antenna’s impedance bandwidth of 2.4 GHz. Furthermore, the total efficiency of the patch antenna has significantly improved from 35% to 70% at 2.4 GHz. The simplicity of the proposed design, coupled with its ability to achieve increased gain, makes it a suitable choice for applications in 2.4 GHz communications. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-0406-5712
