NATURAL DYEING OF WOOL FABRIC WITH MELIA AZEDARACH FRUIT EXTRACT

Natural dyeing from plant sources holds significant interest since sustainability is a global concern. Natural dyeing is become an essential interest, while ordinary dyeing consumes more water and leaves toxic effluents. The fruits of the Melia azedarach plant, which was used as a natural dye in the study, were collected from the trees in the Çukurova University campus, then dried and ground into powder using a mill. Natural dye material from dried fruit powder was extracted through Soxhlet apparatus using ethanol solvent. Wool fabric was dyed by exhaust dyeing method following pre and meta-mordanting techniques with 20% extract. With this regard, Melia azedarach fruit extract was applied to wool fabric with the help of alum, ferrous and copper mordants. The color properties and rubbing fastness have initially been investigated in this work. The greyish wool samples turned bright yellowish after dyeing. A substantial color difference was achieved even when mordant was not used. Alum and copper salt revealed more substantivity than ferrous salt and the pattern for color strength remains the same as of color difference. The maximum rubbing fastness was obtained for all the samples except the ferrous pre-mordanted sample. The tendency of metal-dye chelate formation in that sample was assumed not to show the same substantivity to the sample. ORCID NO: 0000-0001-8591-2217
