SURFACE HARDENING OF TI6AL4V TI ALLOY WITH LOW-POWER FIBER LASER IN AIR
 
Since titanium and titanium alloys combine properties such as low density, high strength and high corrosion resistance, they are widely used in many different applications, from the manufacturing of gas turbine engine parts in the aviation industry to the manufacturing of orthopedic biomedical implants. In current years, laser surface applications have gained attention as an attractive method to modify the surface properties of titanium alloys, aiming to enhance their surface roughness and hardness attributes. In this study, it was aimed to harden the surfaces of Ti6Al4V by heat treatment in air environment using a low-power fiber laser. The influence of fiber laser under various scanning speed and spot radius on microstructural evolution resulting hardness of Ti6Al4V surfaces was investigated. The modification of surface morphology was assessed by means of non-contact laser profilometer and Vicker hardness measurements. The results showed that a remarkable change in the surface roughness was observed by using the minimum spot diameter. Sa value of the Ti6Al4V samples was increased by reducing the spot size. For Vickers hardness tests, it was clearly shown that there was a significant dependence between hardness values and fiber laser parameters. Hardness values increased significantly with lower speeds and smaller spot diameters. ORCID NO: 0009-0001-1448-8356
